If you are interested in short stories then there are some good websites. www.theshortstory.org.uk has some good stories and articles on writing short stories. They also have information on markets which is very useful and details of competitions.Another good website is the Mere Literary Festival website which has details of their competitions.

'Riddling' took first prize in the 2007 Twyford Writers competition.
My short story 'In the Dark' won the 1996 Writer's and Artist's Yearbook short story competition and you can read it on their website.
Another story, How it Happens, won the University of Plymouth creative writing prize but sadly it's no longer on their website, so when I have time, I'll put it on the website.
New stories are published every month on the excellent Pulp Net website - and you will find one of my stories Not the English Margate in the archive. They have different themes and are open to submissions from all writers.
If you're in London then Tales of the Decongested is a good evening to go to where you can hear writers read their stories. You can also submit work for consideration. You'll find one of my stories, Madame Malabar, on their website too. The link is to their home page, just click on stories.
Leaf Books have become quite established over the last couple of years. One of my stories was among the first batch pf books they published. It's also the first story that I've written using my "other name", so look out for Mrs Thomson's Guide to Game Spotting! The books are lovely, very small (pocket size) but really well produced. They are running regular short story competitions and are also doing poetry so it's worth checking out their website.
I recently discovered the British Council New Writing Website, which is an excellent source of stories, poems and extracts of novels made available on a monthly basis. There are also readers' notes and teachers' notes. The material stays online for six months and is great to dip into.
